The garden was founded in 1996 by Rose McNutt with the help of NeighborSpace and Greencorps Chicago. Rose lived two houses down from a vacant lot that was being filled with junk and she didn’t want to look at it any longer. She wanted to turn the lot into a garden to beautify the neighborhood. Oversight of the garden has now been taken over by Rose’s children, Linda and Jerome, and the garden still receives support from the Austin Green Team. There are also volunteers from out of state that come and help work at the garden in the summertime. Flowers grow in the garden alongside three vegetable beds, and the garden is part of the Austin Green Team annual garden tour.
