Roots and Rays is a community allotment garden with 18 raised beds serving individuals, families and organizations throughout Pilsen. There are also container gardens filled with annuals, perennials and herbs. Signage has been erected and woodchips have been spread through the site. The triangular parcel is surrounded by I-beams painted by neighborhood youth.

The garden has developed deep relationships with neighbors as well as institutions such as St. Pious, whose pantry receives food grown in the garden, and Benito Juarez School, whose students participate in the garden through the Build-On program. The garden regularly hosts events for the community such as seed starting/saving, safe gardening in the city and is an active participant in Allianza Verde, the Pilsen community garden network.
