Last spring, Chicago announced an increase in “nuisance fines.” Specifically, fines for properties with weed growth taller than 10 inches was raised to $600 – $1,200.

Unfortunately, NeighborSpace has already received citations for excessive weed at some gardens. We need your help to prevent any further citations and to keep our gardens welcoming, even in winter.
Here’s what you can to help TODAY:
1. Tell your garden group that hefty fines can be issued for excessive weeds and snowy sidewalks.
2. Cut back overly weedy areas of the garden. Pay special attention to the garden border.
3. Keep your native planting areas clean and tidy. To the untrained eye, native plants can be confused for weeds.
4. Engage your Alderman and Ward Superintendent about your garden efforts. If they know you and your garden you are more likely to get a warning rather than a citation.
5. Is it difficult for you to trim weeds because of your physical health or a broken mower? It’s always okay to ask for help. Contact us at info@neighbor-space.org and we will work with you to keep your garden ship-shape.
