About the Garden: The garden was started in 1998 in order to create a natural science laboratory for children who attend the three schools, which include Thurgood Marshall, Murphy Elementary, and Parkview Lutheran in the neighborhood. Since its inception it has been sponsored by the Independence Park Neighborhood Association, which is made up Middle and elementary school teachers and local residents. The garden is used extensively for community service hours by students from UCAN Alternative High School. It is described by Garden Leader Nancy Thompson as “a place of peace for many to come when they need a place to sit and be quiet.”
