The garden was founded in 1980 by Nathaniel Dean. Two homes originally sat on the lot, but burned and were demolished. Mr. Dean and his family cleaned up the lot and transformed it into a community garden. Mr. Dean and family are the primary gardeners, but others from the neighborhood garden as well. The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance and the East Garfield New Communities Program are partners and help provide resources and volunteers. Corn, peppers, tomatoes, collard greens, and a variety of herbs grow in the garden. Mr. Dean hosts several social gatherings on a regular basis, including BBQs. Since the garden’s start, the food harvested has been distributed among the neighbors.
