What Does NeighborSpace Provide to its Sites?

NeighborSpace plays a very specific role in the larger network of preserving and expanding community managed open space in Chicago:Tall sunflowers

  1. It provides successful applicants with the expertise and services necessary to acquire land on their behalf without displacing the community's ongoing garden or park activities,
  2. It supports community efforts to manage the property over the long-term, and
  3. It provides basic liability insurance coverage to those who use the site.

This type of support can ease the burden of community leaders and community organizations wanting to ensure the survival of their hard work without having to shoulder the responsibilities of acquisition, ownership or liability for the site.

NeighborSpace can also help pair applicants with organizations and agencies that supply gardening materials, installation assistance, expertise in garden design and maintenance, and other resources. You can see a list of some of these groups by checking out GreenNet, a network of "greening" organizations in Chicago: www.greennetchicago.org.
