Benefits

NeighborSpace, our partners and founding governmental agencies understand the many ways that green spaces improve the quality of life for Chicago's residents.

Community-managed gardens and parks are developed and maintained by local residents. They build community and decrease anonymity. As those who spend time at these special places will testify the "work" of maintaining gardens and green spaces is a terrific "stress reducer." They also provide opportunities for communities to grow their own food, get in touch with nature, and educate children and teens about gardening.Tall sunflowers

What follows are some benefits that a NeighborSpace community managed park or garden can provide to local residents:

  • Secures land against potential development
  • Provides basic liability insurance for those using the land
  • Supports community control of and engagement in local green open spaces
  • Makes a statement to others about the community's long-term commitment to the area and to preserving open land in the neighborhood
  • Creates long-term opportunities for local non-profits to expand programs that include gardening or park activities
  • When available, NeighborSpace can provide additional garden- or park-related materials
