Awards and Statistics

NeighborSpace has achieved much since its establishment in 1996.

In 2000 NeighborSpace received an Honorable Mention from Harvard's Innovations in American Government Award and was the recipient of an "Acts of Caring Award" from the National Association of Counties, an award from the National Recreation and Park Association Great Lakes Region Partnership Award, and the Award for Excellence in Resource Management from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives.

Garden in the cityIn 2002 NeighborSpace was the recipient of the State of Illinois Governor's "Illinois Tomorrow Award" as well as the James C. Howland Urban Enrichment Gold Award presented by the National League of Cities.

Now in its eleventh year of operation, NeighborSpace continues to set new precedents for this kind of activity and currently:

  • Owns 57 sites,
  • Holds long-term leases for an additional 4 sites, and
  • Sites are located in 31 wards across the City of Chicago.
  • Over 20 additional sites are currently in the review or acquisition process.
