The garden was founded in 1978 by members of the block working with the block club. They sought to clean up a vacant lot and turn it into a garden to beautify the block. There are 25 families from Woodlawn and South Hyde Park that garden at this allotment garden along with student volunteers from University of Chicago hospitals and other colleges. Most families grow vegetables, but there are some common perennials as well. Brickyard has regular garden workdays throughout the gardening season as well as occasional potlucks.
