El Jardin de las Mariposas was started in 1998. The garden committee decided that the garden should focus on plants native to the region and would include artwork featuring pre-historic Mexico. Pros Arts Studio and Dvorak Park Day Camp participants created art pieces for the garden, including a tire sculpture made to look like a monarch butterfly caterpillar and picnic tables that depict the butterflies’ journeys between Chicago and the monarch reserve in Michoacan, Mexico. Monarch Butterflies are represented because they are local to both Chicago and Mexico, also reflecting of the community in Pilsen.
